What is an endoscopy?
As a non-surgical procedure, an endoscopy is used to examine the inside of your gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It’s a safe and pain-free procedure that's used as a high-level diagnostic & screening tool to analyse your bowels and find a solution for a number of different intestinal issues you might have.
If you've got difficulty swallowing or suffer from severe abdominal pain, it’s one of the most sensible ways to really diagnose your problem and come up with a viable solution as soon as possible.
The procedure is carried out using an endoscope, which is a revolutionary long and flexible tube containing a high-resolution video camera. With this camera, your doctor can see the inside of your GI tract with the help of a screen, and will be able to analyse and diagnose a number of issues including inflammation, polyps, ulcers and possible cancer.
While an endoscopy is often used as a diagnostic tool - it can also help aid treatment at the initial stage. As well as providing high-quality images for a doctor to use to analyse your GI tract, it can also be used to perform small procedures such as the removal of tissue and taking biopsies.
There are two main types of endoscopies, targeting the upper and lower GI tracts, which we'll have a look at in more detail a bit further down this article.

The endoscopy procedures we provide
Colonoscopy
An endoscopy of the lower GI tract is normally known as a colonoscopy and is used to view and sometimes treat problems in the large intestine.
A colonoscopy uses a tool called a colonoscope which is a flexible tube with a small camera and light attached. A colonoscopy is used to screen and diagnose a number of issues in the colon or rectum, including polyps and other more serious problems.
A colonoscopy could be recommended for a patient if they present with a number of symptoms including blood in stools, anaemia or altered bowel habit.
You'll normally have a colonoscopy on an outpatient basis and under sedation. A laxative or enema will normally be required prior to the procedure. A colonoscopy can be a sensitive test and a lot of care must be taken to prepare for the procedure.

Gastroscopy
A gastroscopy is used to examine problems in the upper GI tract, including the oesophagus, small bowel and stomach. Similarly to a colonoscopy, it uses a state-of-the-art flexible viewing tube with a camera attached to it.
A gastroscopy can be used to not only diagnose a number of issues, but also to carry out small treatments and take biopsies. However, it is still primarily used as a diagnostic tool.
Gastroscopies can be recommended for patients suffering from a number of symptoms - including abdominal pain, vomiting and nausea, indigestion, bloating or heartburn.
They normally take place under a light anaesthetic and are considered a much more effective diagnostic solution than x-rays in finding a number of issues such as ulcers and inflammation.
A gastroscope can also be used to perform small treatments in order to prevent more serious surgery being needed, like removing polyps and stretching strictures in the tract.

Capsule Endoscopy (PillCam)
One revolutionary new diagnostic tool developed in recent years is the PillCam - also known as a capsule endoscopy. Because some areas of the small intestine are hard to reach with a traditional endoscope, patients can now swallow a small pill which takes multiple images as it passes through the small intestine before being excreted.
Compared with previous diagnostic tools, a PillCam is a non-invasive and straightforward procedure that makes it much easier to diagnose issues in the small intestine.
This procedure is also considered to be one of the safest in the industry, and very rarely has any complications - especially when carried out by a highly trained gastroenterologist.
PillCams can be used to diagnose conditions such as iron-deficiency anaemia, diarrhoea, polyps, ulcers, bowel disease and more.
Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiography
An endoscopic retrograde cholangiography (ERCP) combines an upper GI endoscopy with x-rays to diagnose and treat problems in the bile and pancreatic ducts.
An ERCP can be used to both diagnose conditions and treat them during the procedure. It is normally used when your bile or pancreatic ducts have become narrowed or blocked. Conditions that block these ducts could include gallstones and pancreatitis.
